India and Nepal – Floods – UPDATE (AFP, Local Media)

In Nepal, the number of dead, due to the heavy rains of the past few days that caused floods and landslides, has risen to 22, 18 people were still missing (according to media, as of 19 June). Media reported more than 100 homes damaged, mainly in western Nepal. According to local media the most affected districts in far-Western Region are Darchula, Kanchanpur and Kailali.

In India, according to media (as of 19 June), at least 138 people died, 110 of them in Uttarakhand state and another 28 in the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Local Media (as of early 20 June) reported that the death toll might still increase, since many affected areas have not been reached by rescuers yet. Same sources reports that 57,000 people are still stranded in 3 districts of Uttarakhand.

Mexico – Tropical Cyclone BARRY (GDACS, NOAA, NASA, Civil Protection Mexico, Media)

BARRY (previously named TWO) moved W towards coasts of the state of Vera Cruz (Mexico) on 19 June, strengthening. At 03:00 UTC on 20 June, its centre was located ca. 60 km NE of Veracruz (Mexico) and it was a tropical storm with a max sustained wind speed of 75 km/h.

In the next 24h its centre is forecast to move W, reaching the coasts of the State of Veracruz (Mexico) on 20 June morning, roughly keeping its strength.

As of 03:00 UTC 20 June, a tropical storm warning is in effect for Punta el Lagarto to Tuxpan (Mexico). It might produce heavy rainfall (total rainfall accumulation of 75 mm to 125 mm, with max amounts of ca. 250 mm) across parts of Southern Mexico.

Syria – crisis (ECHO)

In Syria, ongoing hostilities and delayed clearances pose important limitations for the delivery of humanitarian assistance throughout the country. The UN estimates that about 1.2 million people in Rural Damascus are out of reach since March. According to MSF, some 7,000 cases of measles have been recorded in the northern governorates where volatile security conditions make timely vaccination and other essential health interventions extremely difficult. In parallel, the arrival of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries continues.

As at 20 June, UNHCR estimated that 1,663,211 Syrian refugees were in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, of which more than 600,000 had sought refuge outside Syria since March 2013.

Pacific Ocean - Tropical Cyclone LEEPI (GDACS, JMA)

LEEPI (named EMONG in the Philippines) continued moving north over the western Pacific Ocean and passed Miyako Islands (Japan) on 19 June. At 00:00 UTC on 20 June its centre was located ca. 340km N of Miyako Islands and ca. 250 km W of Okinawa (Japan).

In the next 24h it is forecast to turn NE and it might approach Kyushu Island (SW Japan) on 21 June, roughly keeping its strength or slightly weakening; moderate (locally heavy) rains and winds might affect Okinawa and Amami islands on 20 June and parts of Kyushu on 21 June.

Hungary – Floods (Civil Protection)

Due to the severe flood situation, caused by the heavy rains in the catchment basin of Danube River this June, HUNOR and HUSZÁR UN INSARAG classified rescue teams were deployed to give assistance in the flood protection works in Hungary. Teams were deployed on 6th June 2013 for a mission of 8 operational days, two teams altogether with 89 staff, 5 water rescue boats and 2 quads for transporting sand bags. Teams started their activities in Győrújfalu, northwest of the country, close where the Danube River enters to the country and finished their mission in the cities of Baja and Hóduna 300 km away in southern Hungary, where Danube leaves the country. HUNOR and HUSZAR had to re-deploy 4 times during its application, and for the first time worked together with civil and military heavy cargo helicopters in directing the deposition of 1ton sand buckets, night time and daytime, practically non-stop.

Main activities of HUNOR and HUSZÁR were: coordination and control of flood protection works along the several kilometers long dams, protect the dykes with sand bags, helicopter airlift ground command, coordinate the work of sand bag filling stations, the activities of volunteers, evacuation of the population of Győrújfalu.

France – Flash Floods – UPDATE (COGIC, Local media)

As a result of the flash floods that hit SW France on 17-18 June, two people were killed in the department of Hautes-Pyrenees and another one in the department of Landes.

Italy – Severe weather (Local Media)

According to local media strong winds and heavy rains affected the area near Biella (North-western Italy) on 19 June morning, damaging a number of roofs.
